There are antique markets like 1stdibs.com, where access to the finest signed collectible jewelry can be anytime, anywhere. The latest platform to enter this space is Everything But Home (EBTH), which for comparison is more scraping, more like an online shoe sale. And that’s the point.
True bargain hunters, even in the world of fine jewelry, love nothing better than rummaging through a never-before-seen mishmash of merchandise in search of the proverbial rough diamond. And on May 5, EBTH is hosting a sale featuring some 132 lots of antique and antique jewelry that discerning jewelers should consider checking out. The best part? Bids start at $ 1, and there are no bounties, no reserves.
First you will need to eliminate the gnarly swarm of commercial-grade, no-frills birthstone jewelry and 10k gold jewelry set with synthetic stones. But I was fortunate enough to preview the sale and browse through the deals to find 12 solid options for JCK readers to consider. There is bridal jewelry, including an 18k white gold eternity ring that will practically resell itself. And the most resourceful of designers will see the value in discarding, for example, a pair of dark rose cut diamond stud earrings or a green tourmaline pendant and resetting the gems in brand new pieces.
There are also a few genuine antique pieces which, while not in perfect condition, may attract attention in a wrapped velvet ring tray. Art Deco onyx and diamond pieces are in demand, and I’ve found a decent-looking ring set with old-fashioned cut stones that is worth a look.
Of course, this isn’t the most prestigious auction you’ve ever seen, and it’s more fun to shop for property in person, but imagine bragging rights if your scavenger hunt is successful.
Sale begins Saturday, May 5 at 2 a.m. EDT and ends Wednesday, May 9 at 8:15 p.m. EDT. But if you bid on an item within the last 5 minutes of the sale, you’ll have an extra 5 minutes to bid again (and again) until someone scores.
