Okay, here is the blog post sharing my experience of remaking the Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119G-001.

Man, I gotta tell you about this watch project I just finished. It was a doozy, but so satisfying. I decided to try and recreate the Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119G-001. Yeah, the fancy one. I know, I know, it’s a super classy watch, but I figured, why not give it a shot?

So, first thing I did was stare at a bunch of pictures of the real deal online. I mean, I really looked at them, all the little details. This Calatrava, it’s known for being simple, but that’s what makes it so elegant. It has a round shape, you know, like most wristwatches. And this 6119G-001, it’s got this cool textured pattern on the bezel. They call it a “hobnail” pattern, or “Clous de Paris” if you’re feeling fancy. It’s like a bunch of tiny pyramids all lined up. Pretty neat, right?

Next, I had to figure out how to actually make this thing. I grabbed some basic watch parts that I had lying around. I started by finding a round watch case that was similar in size and shape to the Calatrava. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a good starting point. Then came the hard part – that hobnail pattern.

  • I tried a few different methods to recreate the texture.
  • First, I experimented with some tiny files, but that was way too slow and didn’t look quite right.
  • Then, I tried using a small hammer and a pointed tool to create the indentations. That was a little better, but still not great.

Finally, after a lot of trial and error, I found a method that worked pretty well. I used a small engraving tool and very carefully made the pattern on the bezel. It took forever, let me tell you, and my eyes were definitely tired afterward. But it ended up looking pretty darn close to the real thing, at least in my humble opinion.

After I got the bezel done, the rest was relatively smooth sailing. I found a simple white dial and some thin black hands that matched the original pretty well. I put it all together, and you know what? It actually looked like a watch! And not just any watch, but something that kind of resembled that fancy Patek Philippe Calatrava.

It Was Not Easy

I’m not gonna lie, this project was a real challenge. There were times when I wanted to just give up. But I kept at it, and in the end, I’m really proud of what I accomplished. It’s not perfect, but it’s my own little version of a classic watch, and that’s pretty cool.

So, yeah, that’s the story of my Patek Philippe Calatrava remake. It was a fun and frustrating journey, but I learned a lot along the way. Maybe I’ll try another crazy watch project soon. Who knows!
