Alright, so today I’m gonna walk you through my little project of remaking the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227R-001, just like you’d see on their official flagship store. It’s a real beauty, and I’ve always wanted one. But, you know, these things are crazy expensive. So, I figured, why not try to make my own version?
First off, I started by gathering all the info I could find about this watch. I mean, pictures, specs, anything I could get my hands on. This Patek Philippe Calatrava, it’s a 39mm watch, not too big, not too small. And it’s got this brown alligator strap, which sounds fancy, right? That’s pretty much all I could find out there – it is fancy, and expensive. Many folks think that it worths that much money. It is a luxury watch. But some are as cheap as eleven thousand. I’m not dropping that kind of cash, so DIY it is.
Breaking Down the Process
- Finding the materials was a challenge. I wanted it to look legit, you know? So I spent hours online, looking for a watch case that was similar. Ended up finding one that was pretty close. Not perfect, but it would do.
- Then there’s the strap. Alligator? Yeah, right. I opted for a decent-looking leather strap instead. Found one online that was brown and had a similar texture. Close enough.
- The dial was the trickiest part. I printed out a high-res image of the real deal and carefully cut it to fit my watch case. It wasn’t easy, and it’s definitely not as clean as the original.
- Assembling it all, I used some basic watchmaking tools I had lying around. Nothing too fancy. I carefully placed the dial, secured the hands (which, by the way, I just used from an old watch I had), and fixed the strap.
- In order to find out the price for it, I searched on the website and found out that they cost a lot! I also found the price for 56 Patek Philippe Ref 5227R watches on a website.
The whole thing took me a good few days, working on and off. It was a fun little project, and while my version is nowhere near the real Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227R-001, it’s kind of cool to have something that looks a bit like it. The dial is very nice.
